Energy Savings with Multilayer Traffic Engineering in Future Core Networks

Abstract: The main advantage of multilayer automatically switched IP-over-MPLS-over-optical networks is their ability and their flexibility to adapt to the variations of the offered traffic. Multilayer traffic engineering mechanisms exploit this characteristic and perform traditional rerouting enriched with online IP logical topology reconfiguration. These mechanisms aim at optimizing resource usage and maximizing QoS, e.g. in terms of bandwidth, throughput and delay. Recently except from performance, energy efficiency in backbone core networks has gained much attention. In this article, we will examine how multilayer traffic engineering techniques can help to increase energy savings and minimize energy consumption. As we will present the simultaneous optimization of routing and minimization of the number of active network elements leads to significant energy savings. We will propose an adaptive algorithm for IP/MPLS/WDM with traffic grooming networks, which will aggregate traffic flows in the same LSPs and consequently in the same optical wavelengths.
Additionally, this algorithm has the objective to reduce energy by switching off unused router line cards. In this way routing is optimized and the topology of IP layer is adapted to the variations of traffic in network. To achieve this, LSPs (links and optical channels) must be recomputed every time a new traffic flow enters network, using a specific cost function to compute link and channels weights according to their current availability.

Abstract: One of the targets of Green Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is to reduce the energy consumption of ICT itself. This paper provides a tutorial on a new energy reduction approach – self-organization aided network sharing, which exploits the concept of cooperation and adaptation in the cellular system level. Detail reviews from different perspectives including the academic
literature, the existing standard, etc. are provided. Moreover, a simply example with simulation results is provided to demonstrate the energy efficiency of the proposed scheme.

Abstract: One of the main challenges of the arising wireless world is to support a wide set of QoS-demanding services. However, the solutions that will be considered should not only take into consideration the optimization of the network performance, but should also be energy efficient both for the operator and the end-user. This paper presents the concept of Opportunistic Networks (ONs) as an energy efficient method to exploit wireless networks. The cases studied in this work comprise a macro base station and femtocells. The proposed solution will offload a proportion of the traffic of the base station to the femtocells, through the creation of an ON. Therefore, the base station will consume less energy since terminals will be rerouted to the femtocells. In addition, the femto-terminals will operate to lower
power levels leading to battery savings. Results from simulations are provided to confirm the proposed solution.

Abstract: Energy efficiency of computing equipment in office and residential environments gets more and more important, with respect to the world-wide desire to reduce CO2 emissions and the increasing cost of energy. While hardware itself gets cheaper, the cost of energy begins to dominate the total cost of ownership of a product. This paper gives an overview on energy saving methods that are applied
today, with a special focus on office and residential environments. Currently used methods are classified into three categories: (1) autonomous management of devices, (2) coordinated management of devices, and (3) coordinated management of services. Various implementations of these methods in office and residential environments are described and compared to each other. The comparison illustrates possible directions of future research in the area of energy efficiency.

Abstract: The Information and Communications Technology (ICT) infrastructure is
recognized as a key enabler to the growth of the global economy. With increased data transfer, there is an unprecedented growth in the associated energy consumption, carbon emissions and operational cost of ICT. In order for operators to increase competitiveness, the challenge
is how to satisfy the growing data demand, whilst reducing the energy consumption and costs. This paper considers the wireless cellular network for both outdoor and indoor environments. Novel and theoretical bounds are presented for energy and cost savings.
Investigation results show that with careful redesign of the cellular network architecture, up to 60–70% reduction in energy consumption and 25% in OPEX can be achieved for indoor and outdoor environments. Furthermore, a detailed sensitivity analysis is also presented, which is
novel and beneficial to future researchers.

Abstract: Participation in environmentally friendly or green initiatives for ensuring that all processes, products, and manufacturing activities adequately address current environmental apprehensions has become mandatory in today’s global operating environment by any organization. The ability of a business
to meet the needs of the present world without compromising the sustainability and the well being of the future generations to meet their own needs is a social and ethical challenge. A lot of debate is
being done over the last decades about the impact of consuming and wasting products on the environment. With the constant increase of consumers’ awareness on the matter, businesses and governments are asked to provide solutions to these questions. This growing trend concerning “green businesses” forces companies to develop and implement strategies to minimize environmental impact that their products and services have. The focus of this paper is to investigate the responsiveness of Cypriot businesses in the global call for ecologically friendly initiatives along with their impact on their performance, on their business strategy and on their consumers. The findings show that companies in Cyprus are pursuing various environmental initiatives involving mainly
their recycling habits and issues, certification and energy preservation.
