Semantic Interoperability: Issues, Solutions, Challenges

Editor: Salvatore F. Pileggi, Carlos Fernandez-Llatas
s.f.pileggi@ieee.org

The Semantic Web would be an evolving extension of current Web model (referred as Syntactic Web) that introduces a semantic layer in which semantics, or meaning of information are formally defined. Semantics should integrate web-centric standard information infrastructures improving several aspects of interaction among heterogeneous systems: semantic interoperability would improve common interoperability models (basic and functional interoperability) introducing the interpretation of means of data. Semantic interoperability is a concretely applicable interaction model under the assumption of adopting rich data models (commonly called Ontology) composed of concepts within a domain and the relationships among those concepts. Semantic technologies are partially inverting the common view at actor intelligence: intelligence is not implemented (only) by actors but it is implicitly resident in the knowledge model. In other words, schemas contain information and the "code" to interpretate it.

Important Dates:
Chapter Proposal: February 28, 2011
Acceptance Notification: March 7, 2011
Chapter Submission: TBD
Final Chapter Submission: TBD

Chapter Proposal. A chapter proposal should include the chapter title, the authors list, a short biography of at least one of the authors as well as an extended abstract of the proposed chapter. The extended abstract (2-3 page) should fully explain the topic(s) and the goal(s) of the chapter. A list of related keywords and a (tentative) table of content of the chapter are welcomed.

Proposals can be submitted by mail to the Editor (s.f.pileggi@ieee.org). After the acceptance notification, any author will be requested to sent the first draft of the chapter.

The chapter will be reviewed and comments will be sent to authors that can provide a final version of the chapter according to reviewers and/or Editor comments.
